"I'm just so glad we aren't mind controlled like those other - what's that Brother? Yes, I'm planning on shaving my face just as soon as we get back to the hotel. I wouldn't want to violate the Societies' official policy of facial hair no longer then 3 microns. Anyway, as I was saying - I'm just so glad we aren't brainwashed like those other religions . . ."

Discussion with 2 Elders about IS
by Da.Furious insome will notice i was really busy during the weekend, thats true as some jws will say i was in a spiritual paradise surrounded by brothers.. my view of a paradise is everybody living in harmony and happy, my weekend experience was more like unhappy people and complaining about almost everything, not to mentioned the quite discussion in the corners (i.e.
gossips).. anyway, during on the discussions, the is (islamic state) topic was started.
it all started when on the elders said that he prefers to talk to muslims in the ministry since they are more open minded and accept our teaching.. i dont come from a muslim background but lived among them enough to understand what they believe.

What's "THE END" going to look like?
by Coded Logic inokay, so its no secret that many of us are hoping to see the downfall of the wtbts (or at least a mass exodous of jws away from them anyway).
i was wondering if you had any thoughts on what this might look like?.
we all know that most every jw has their doubts, large and small, but is afraid to speak due to the illusion of unanimity and self censorship .

I don't understand why many have left God because the religions are false?
I don't understand why many children have left Santa Clause because the holiday is fasle?
. . . people don't "leave" God anymore than children leave Santa Clause. Rather, we realize neither of them existed in the first place. And having no good reason to believe something - is a perfectly good reason not to believe in it.

FOR SALE: Gloom, Doom, and Persecution.
by Coded Logic inreligion is the sigh of the oppressed creature - it is the spirit of a spiritless situation.. .
it's really sad that jws only ever see the bad things in the world and are either unable or unwilling to acknowledge that now is the safest and most prosperous time in all of human history to have ever lived.
within the last hundred years we have gone from the wright brothers first flight, to setting foot on the moon, to curiosity exploring another world.

“Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature - it is the spirit of a spiritless situation.”
The average life expectancy has increased from 42 years to a ripe old age of 79 (and still rising 3 years for every decade of progress). Global malnutrition rates have plummeted from over 50% down to less than 15%. And less people die every year from suicide, murders, and war combined (2.8% of annual deaths) than from strokes (9.66% of annual deaths). If JWs don’t think this is progress for a better world then let me ask the question; what has the WTBTS done for humanity over the past 100 years?

Reverse Shunning
by exwhyzee insometing happened yesterday that i thought might be noteworty enough to relate to you here.. mrs. eyz and i were invited to my new boss's home for his annual end of summer party.
it's a pretty big deal....his is a name known locally (i'll call him j.r.) a really nice interesting guy who's held a number of high level and politically connected jobs.
there was to be music, dancing, wine and reprotedly lots of well dressed, well educated, well to do and influential people (oh yes...and us) in attendance.. anyway we thought we'd make an occasion out of it and got ourselves spiffed up which involved new outfits and extra mirror time before we left home.

Best story ever! The way a lot of JWs act is completely unethical and they deserve to be called out and shown they don't have any moral high ground. Glad your son got better too!

What's the difference between "independent thinking" and "using decernment"?
Don't you have to think independently in order to use decernment?

Okay, so it’s no secret that many of us are hoping to see the downfall of the WTBTS (or at least a mass exodous of JWs away from them anyway). I was wondering if you had any thoughts on what this might look like?
We all know that most every JW has their doubts, large and small, but is afraid to speak due to The Illusion of Unanimity and Self Censorship . When the doubts finally come boiling to the surface - as JWs realize that everyone shares similar concerns about the Society as they do - will there be a volatile reaction?
I feel like this sort of collective awareness isn’t that far off (though I might be biased by my own awakening). And I feel that once it reaches a certain tipping point there will be no stopping it. If a person's friends and family start to leave there’s not much incentive to stay.
Anyway, I was hoping to hear some of your thoughts on this. What do you think could be a potential catalyst and in what manner do you think JWs will choose to leave? What do you think the downfall of this religion might look like? In what kind of time frame? And how will the WTBTS react?
P.S. If you have some extensive ideas and you want to start a new thread that's cool too! Just so long as I get to read your ideas somewhere :)

David and Abishag
by opusdei1972 in1 king david was now very old, and no matter how many blankets covered him, he could not keep warm.2 so his advisers told him, let us find a young virgin to wait on you and look after you, my lord.
she will lie in your arms and keep you warm.
3 so they searched throughout the land of israel for a beautiful girl, and they found abishag from shunem and brought her to the king.4 the girl was very beautiful, and she looked after the king and took care of him.

I'm no textual critic, but I wouldn't be surprised if that final sentence, " But the king had no sexual relations with her" was added later. It does seem a completely out of place just like some of the additions to the end of Mark do.

Can you help with a definition for Evolution?
by Fernando ini'm trying to pin down a definition for evolution, hopefully in plain english, and some questions have come to mind:.
is this a fool's errand?.
has evolution itself evolved?.

Evolution is a Scientific Theory that explains the diverse speciation we see on our planet today. Or, more simply put, why there are so many different species of plants, animals, fungi, bacteria, protists, and archaea. Evolution has two main components - Selection (either Natural, Artificial, or Sexual) and Genetic Mutation - that cause changes in the inherited characteristics of biological populations over successive generations.
I'm trying to pin down a definition for Evolution, hopefully in plain English, and some questions have come to mind:
Is this a fool's errand?
It depends on how specific you want to be. For example, gravity is a Scientific Theory. You can say something as simple as "gravity explains the attraction of two or more objects with mass." Or, you could go much deeper by explaining how gravity fits into general relitivity and quantum mechanics. It's up to you. This might shed some light on the matter:
"Scientfic Theories describe the causal elements responsible for a particular natural phenomenon, and are used to explain and predict aspects of the physical universe or specific areas of inquiry (e.g. electricity, chemistry, astronomy). Scientists use theories as a foundation to gain further scientific knowledge, as well as to accomplish goals such as inventing technology or curing disease."
Has Evolution itself evolved?
If so how has the definition evolved?
When evolution was first purposed it was known that species passed on their traits and charachteristics to their offspring. But, at the time, no one knew exactly what the mechanisim was. It wasn't until much later when DNA was discovered that we began to understand exactly how genetic mutation works. But, from its inception, both components of evolution were there.
Is there current consensus between Evolutionists on a definition?
There is scientfic consensus on the theory of evolution among academics in the Life Sciences (developmental and molecular biology, ecology, embryology, ontogeny, osteology, paleontology, etc).
When you say "evolutionists" I assume you are simply refering to people who accept the theory of evolution. But this really conflates the issue because the theory of evolution is a scientific term with a precise and defenitive meaning. How the lay person chooses to describe it has no bearing on the theory at all.
It would be like asking "do "Cellulists" have a concensus on how to define cells?" Likewise, Cell Theory is a scientfic term with a precise meaning. How people who accept the existance of cells choose to define it has nothing to do with the actual science.
Are there different schools of thought and definitions?
Like any theory, if you get deep enough into it, you will eventually find a small enough point where scientfic concensus finally starts to diverge. Imagine you're trying to prove to me that Ford Mustangs exist. And I ask you for a definition of a Ford Mustang. You could give me a very broad answer like "it's a car" or you could go into great detail. Now imagine I took two experts on Ford Mustangs and they got into a super in depth conversation about the vehichal. One of thme was pretty sure the screw for the exhaust manifold was a flat head and the other thought it took a diamond head.
It's going to be at this sort of depth scientist have thier disagreements on evolution. It's a level so finite most of us would wonder why they even care in the first place.

All religions are false, but god is true.
by Domenic ini was a jw for many years.
during those years i learned how to identify a false religion.
all the other religions were easy to prove false.

I still believe in God. Looking around me. The beauty of autumn, the power of the sea and the laughter of children.

Umm, I'm pretty sure all those things are part of the natural world. Just like hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, tsunamies, wildfires, landslides, meteorites, virus', parasites, etc.

Just to be fair, anyone can place a flag on the window, take the picture and remove it. I want to see it inside while they are conducting the meeting
The 18th doesn't fall on a Sunday this year. And if a KH ministry school happens to fall on that Thursday they'll probably just move it. And it doesn't makes since that an apostate would put up the flag for the JWs. They would want them to have to pay the fine.
